Levuka Fiji Islands – A Taste of Historical Fiji

The very name of Fiji may conjure up images of lush, green rainforests and white sand beaches in your head. You may also picture the native Fijians in some form of traditional dress. You may even think back to how Fiji was ceded to the nation of Great Britain in 1874. No matter how you picture Fiji, there is one place where you can see everything you imagined Fiji to be. The town of Levuka Fiji Islands, located on the island of Ovalau, is the former capital of Fiji and home to a rich base of history and culture in this fascinating island country.

Back in 1874, Levuka Fiji Islands was the site of the arrival of Fiji’s first European settlers. Even today, the traditional Fijian village still stands at the northern end of the town, and its chief is a direct descendent of the same chief that received and welcomed the first settlers from Europe.

Levuka is also the site of the Cession Stone, which commemorates the location where the Deed of Cession was signed between Fiji and Great Britain, officially making Fiji a colony of Great Britain.

It’s not far from the Anniversary Bure that was built for Prince Charles when he arrived in Levuka 1970 to grant independence to Fiji. Levuka is an integral part of Fijian history, and no visit to Levuka is complete without at least a glimpse at the historical aspect of the town.

While the history of Levuka Fiji Islands is undoubtedly fascinating, it’s sure to take more of a hold of you if you see it with your own eyes. The Fiji Museum has a branch in Levuka. It houses some of the nation’s oldest artifacts and also offers some of the most comprehensive information about the history and culture of Fiji.

You can also visit the old village of Levuka, as well as several other villages that reflect the ancient way of Fijian life. There are also exhibitions of cultural dance and samplings of traditional Fijian cuisine as well.
