RAROTONGA
RAROTONGA - is the vibrant center of the Cook Islands. Its circular shape is dominated by the high mountain peaks with lush rain forests to beautiful shores. The island is almost completely encircled by a reef, with clear turquoise waters and many white sand beaches. Beyond the reef the indigo blue waters provide a bountiful supply of fish. Avarua is the main town on the island and the commercial center of the Cook Islands. During business hours the friendly people have a good selection of shops, banks, cafes and visitor facilities. It is also the main port and host to many cruising yachts. The visitors center, located downtown, is open from 8am - 4pm Monday - Friday. Getting around - As the entire island is only 32 kilometers in circumference, getting around is very easy. There are two main roads on Rarotonga. One road - the Ara Tapu is a coastal road through the villages and past the beaches, or you can take the older inland road which winds through fields of taro, pawpaw, bananas and local farmlands. The motor scooter is a popular, fun way to get around and see the sights, however, bikes, cars and jeeps are also available to rent. The "Island bus" offers a convenient and inexpensive way to get around. The bus will pick you up and drop you off anywhere on your request.

Aitutaki - a visit to the Cook Islands is not complete without seeing the beautiful island of Aitutaki with it's crystal clear turquoise waters and sparkling white sand beaches. Aitutaki is 220 kilometers north of Rarotonga and about a 1 hour flight. You will find a variety of shops. restaurants, bars and entertainment scattered throughout the village. The most popular way to get around is the motor scooter.
